he 2014 Catalytic Fund on the topic “Know Your City” recognizes the urgent need for data and information to catalyze city change. Sponsored by Cities Alliance, the CATF provides financial support to innovative projects that strengthen and promote the role of cities in poverty reduction and sustainable urban development. The initiative also includes a global campaign, led by the Cities Alliance’s members Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), which empowers slum dwellers to collect data about their own settlements and use it to advocate for improved services. It is a reporting tool for citizens to provide direct feedback to the municipality on its urban upgrading initiatives, or a mobile app collecting crowdsourced information to make cities safer for women.
The selected projects focus on how city-level data and information can contribute to two broad imperatives:
(1) Producing innovative and sustainable ways of collecting relevant and accurate data and information to bridge accountability, transparency and trust gaps, as well as to support inclusive city planning and responsive service delivery; and
(2) Starting a dynamic engagement among city decision makers, service providers, communities, informal workers’ groups and other excluded areas that are currently not fully represented in the city´s formal governance and planning process.
The ¨Know your City¨ program also encompasses the Cities Alliance innovative data toolkit for city management. The toolkit purpose is to provide a step-by-step guide for local government officials that compile basic data, system, resources and security needs so that cities can plan and govern more effectively, and they can understand the city better and make evidence-based decision.
