The municipality is located south of Chilpancingo, between parallels 16 ° 41 '05' 'and 17 ° 11' 37 '' north latitude and meridians 99 ° 30 '00' 'and 99 ° 59' 49 '' west longitude . Its territorial extension is 1882.6 km 2 , which represents 2.95% of the state surface. Bordered north with the municipalities of Chilpancingo and Juan R. Escudero, south with the Pacific Ocean, east with the municipality of San Marcos and west with the municipality of Coyuca de Benitez. The municipal seat is the city and port of Acapulco de Juárez, located 105 km from the state capital and with an altitude of 20 meters above sea level.
It is the most populated municipality of the entity; the II Population and Housing Count 2005, of the INEGI, reports 717 766 inhabitants, of which, 344 318 are men (47.96%) and 373 448, women (52.04%); said population is equivalent to 23.04% of the total population of the state.
