The metropolitan area of Barcelona is home to 3,239,337 people in a territory of 636 km2. and it is located in Catalonia, where 7,570,908 people live.The AMB is the public administration of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, a large urban conurbation made up with 36 municipalities.
The constitution as public administration was on July 21st 2011 in accordance with Law 31/2010 passed by the Parliament of Catalonia. Since then, the AMB replaces the three existing metropolitan entities until that date: Mancomunitat de Municipis de l'Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (Union of Municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona), Entitat del Medi Ambient (Environmental Agency) and Entitat Metropolitana del Transport (Transport Metropolitan Agency).
The AMB has the function of providing public services in the metropolitan area of Barcelona through citizenship involvement and participation and by means of the dialogue with economic and social agents. The metropolitan administration also supports the management of town councils forming it. The constitution of the AMB governing bodies takes place after the municipal elections, generally at the end of July, and their mandate lasts four years.
