Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is a province of Turkey. It has an area of 5,343.02 square kilometres (2,062.95 sq mi) and is located in the Marmara region in the north-west of the country, bordered by Tekirdağ Province to the west and Kocaeli Province to the east. Istanbul Province has a population of 14,804,116 as of 2016, making it the most populous province in Turkey. Out of a population of 12.9 million in 2009, roughly 8 million lived on the European side and the remaining 5 million lived on the Asian.
Since 2004, Istanbul Province and the metropolitan municipality of Istanbul have identical boundaries, effectively making the city and the province coterminous.
